Gotta be honest - the engineer brain in me really likes the idea of a climate-controlled "ideal environment" build. For many, modular homes are a great method to build a house, as opposed to a stick built, which is exposed to the elements.
Not only that, but the pre-fabrication manufacturing sites have an easier ability to inspect quality, ensuring no fastener gets missed.
But can you have a pre-fab home that is custom? The answer to that is - YES!
The company we zeroed in on (linked here) interested us the most due to their designs, and was closer in location to others in the South and West. After interviewing and learning about their meticulous process, I'll use Kody's words: "If it was the same price, we would do it."
This company uses outstanding green building practices (air recovery systems, low VOC materials, etc.) and implements many strategies from Europe. They were not only the builder, but the architect for the project. A true design-build firm. They would help you take your vision and enable the design to be modular sections to be manufactured. Custom stick built homes can take a year or longer, while this build required 5-6 months, and setting it to the foundation at the property only takes a day!
The only downsides were we would indeed still need a local general contractor to finish the house once it's set on the property. So basically another builder fee. The other issue was the cranes/trucks access to the site, given we are on a wooded lot trying to preserve the trees. Last downside was the price. Due to the nature in which this company ran their business, it was still $100/square foot over what we were planning.
However, I still wanted to bring it up as it may be a great option for others!
Another interesting manufacturer of pre-fab is linked below :)
