5 KEY ELEMENTS TO START YOUR ZEN GARDEN

At Striking Modern, I like to emphasize intention. Design the space around you with intention- objects that bring you bliss, peace, or inspiration - because ultimately it is our surroundings that dictate our mindset. Zen gardens represent just that. A space free from clutter, to allow you to unwind and reflect in peace. Whether you are picking elements to bring into your backyard patio, or a small shelf in your office, here are the elements to consider when bringing this Japanese-inspired vibe to your space.

1. WATER

Water is the #1 must-have for your garden. Whether it's a koi pond or a small fountain, water will transform your space with both aesthetics and ambience. Be careful to consider the scale of your space, so the water feature isn't too overwhelming. A waterfall can quickly degrade your space's atmosphere if it is too loud for the surrounding area.

2. SAND OR GRAVEL

You will often find sand or gravel raked into patterns in a zen garden. At work my coworker had a tabletop zen garden, and it was always fun to see the different personalities and patterns that emerged in the garden. Raking itself can be a mindful practice for you to connect intentionally with your surroundings. Sand/gravel as the anchor for your garden will help provide a minimalistic environment.

3. GREENS

Whether it's grass, moss, succulents, or bonsai, plants are a must for your zen garden. Plants can always transform the space in terms of design. For some may opt for a simplistic grass approach, others may incorporate a tree as a focal point. Get creative with this part of your garden and allow it to reflect your personality. You can even consider artificial plants so your garden is more of a retreat than a chore. I personally opt for artificial grass and live bonsai. What plants inspire you? Bring these to your space and allow it to become integrated with your daily rituals.

4. STONES

Something you'll continue to find in zen gardens are stones. While outside you could get creative by allowing these to be stepping stones, these will provide a base for the garden and help break up the sand and gravel by adding contrast. Even the arrangement of the stones can help to provide intention and personality to the space.

5. BRIDGE OR SCULPTURE

Although zen gardens are certainly traditional Buddhism art forms, we can always take elements and write our own script. Historically you can find a Buddha or a bridge in zen gardens. These are beautiful additions, but also don't hesitate to add a sculpture of your own that represents zen and tranquility to you.
